BOV117261 - Traditional Storage, the Way of the Past & Software-Defined Storage, the Way of the Future In this talk, you will get an in-depth look at traditional storage—including costs, scalability, manageability, and maintenance costs—and how it compares to software defined storage based on these parameters. We’ll refer to case studies and real-world examples of organizations that have implemented software defined storage and the results they achieved in terms of strategic and business benefits. This will be a strong but realistic business overview of why software defined storage should be part of your IT planning, including how to use this building block for internal or external clouds and a detailed cost analysis linked to real-world "street price" costs. 1 Hour Business Overview Scott Warner
BOV117842 - SUSE on Microsoft Azure In this talk, you'll get first-hand information about the current offerings and new product developments on the Azure platform (CaaSP, Windows Subsystem for Linux on SUSE Linux, Hyper-V isolation, SUSE Linux on Azure Stack Hybrid Cloud). 1 Hour Business Overview Justin Davies

BOV119040 - Overview: SUSE Enterprise Storage Management with DeepSea and openATTIC Distributed storage solutions such as Ceph pose unique challenges in enterprise environments. Because of its great flexibility and functionality, Ceph is sometimes perceived as complex—especially in larger environments. That's why SUSE develops the open source projects DeepSea and openATTIC. DeepSea is a Salt-based framework that allows you to control the deployment, configuration, and lifecycle management of your SUSE Enterprise Storage cluster. Compared to existing tools like ceph-deploy (which is already deprecated), many previously manual steps are automated and high-level tasks can be orchestrated—all of which reduce your daily workload. To make DeepSea even easier and more accessible, we added support for it in openATTIC as a web frontend to manage and monitor a Ceph cluster by using a Graphical User Interface (GUI). If you've never heard about Salt, Ceph and Object Store, and you're also interested in how to operate Ceph from the CLI and GUI on a high-level basis, then this is the right talk for you. 1 Hour Business Overview Lenz Grimmer
Kai Wagner
BOV122255 - SUSE CaaS Platform or SUSE OpenStack Cloud: Which Platform Is Right for Your Business? "Many of you are looking to start consuming containers or want to consume them in a more enterprise- friendly way. However, the marketplace can be a perplexing minefield of products. CaaS, IaaS, EverythingaaS: the choices are endless and can be understandably confusing for business leaders and entrepreneurs worldwide. SUSE has two products that can help you empower DevOps and containers: OpenStack Cloud and Containers as a Service Platform. In this session designed for business leaders, managers and decision makers, we will walk you through the characteristics of these products and demystify the technical jargon. We will also review use cases for each and discuss the benefits for your business. In addition, we will provide you with user and developer stories and other insights we have gained along the way. All of this will equip you with tools and knowledge to help you decide which platform should empower your container infrastructure as we enter the new containerized world together." 1 Hour Business Overview Pieter Jenniskens

BOV124370 - Why Reinvent the Wheel? Sharing Expertise, Experience and Knowledge via the SUSE Best Practices "For many enterprises, a lot of hidden IT experience exists in the ecosystem. This is also the case for SUSE—no matter which product or technology you are looking at. For every product or solution, there are subject matter experts that have profound know-how and skills. But this kind of information is usually not publicly available. The purpose of the SUSE Best Practices is to change this situation by making existing knowledge and experience available to a broader audience. This new type of documentation (in contrast to the SUSE product documentation, which mainly guides you through product installation and usage) delivers a series of topic-driven guides and provides installation and implementation ""experiences."" Best of all, YOU can contribute and you can re-use it! We share all product documentation under an open document license, such as the GNU Free Documentation License. And we primarily use open source tools to create our guides, quick starts, and of course our SUSE Best Practices. If you are open to sharing your experience and knowledge in the true spirit of ""Open Source""; curious to learn more about the tools and processes used to create our documentation; or eager to discover how you can influence the output of the SUSE documentation, come and join the talk!" 1 Hour Business Overview Meike Chabowski
BOV124429 - Jeopardy-like Game: What's That Distribution? (Or: My Last Talk) "I assume this will be the last talk I ever give, because after this, every single distribution's community will be out to kill me. Ladies and Gentlemen, bring your hatchets! Why? Well, I have collected quotes, sentences and assumptions that speak for themselves—from and about distributions and community leaders. Come prepared to demonstrate your knowledge of the industry by answering questions such as “Who is the ‘Microsoft’ of open source?"" “Who thinks they own open source?” “Who was bought twice, and neither of the buyers exist anymore?” “Who has hired a Gentoo guy as head of package management?” “Who is still compiling Libre Office and, therefore, can't open a document?” “What's that distribution with three, four, five names that are constantly changing?” Add your own. This ""Lightning talk"" is open source and a call for your ideas and discussion." 1 Hour Business Overview Meike Chabowski

CAS127176 - Email Storage with Ceph @ SUSE Enterprise Storage "Most enterprise email solutions make use of traditional local file systems or shared file systems like NFS to store data, indexes and caches. Software-defined storage solutions such as Ceph have disrupted the storage market in the last few years because they offer more options, like object store. For emails, object store is a logical choice as a storage backend. Ceph offers two object store backends: Rados Gateway (RGW) via S3/Swift and librados itself to store objects directly in a Ceph cluster. For an email system with millions of active customers, the Rados Gateway would very likely become a bottleneck. To achieve maximum performance using parallel I/O from all clients, librados is the best option because it uses the native RADOS protocol and involves fewer software layers. This talk will provide insight in what Deutsche Telekom, together with partners and SUSE products, is doing to move from NFS to Ceph-based storage for email. To make use of Ceph, we developed an open source library called librmb (librados mailbox) to unify email storage via librados." 1 Hour Case Study Danny Al-Gaaf

CAS127723 - Scaling C++ Development and Quality Assurance "Today's C++ software development infrastructures have to deal with a number of challenges. In this talk, I’ll provide insight in a very common one: the balance between the demand for new features, code, and technology and the strict need for stable software code lines and a reliable software development environment. At SAP we develop the HANA Database Core with a large team distributed around the globe. This effort would be impossible without a highly automated infrastructure for building and testing our software. Through our partnership with SUSE, we receive the software pieces for storage, containerization and, of course, a state-of-the-art development toolchain. In this talk, I’ll show how we put all of these together to run development 24/7." 1 Hour Case Study Matthias Männich
